Aboard AmaWaterway's AmaLucia

Depart United States
We highly recommend you consider departing the US a day earlier - Tuesday, December 7 - to be sure you arrive on time to make the ship should a flight be delayed or cancelled. And arriving a day early will also give time to recover from the journey. Our office will recommend some hotels for your consideration. This is a great time to use your hotel points.
Board transatlantic flights from home and fly overnight to Amsterdam (airport code AMS).
Thursday, December 9
Arrive in Amsterdam
Arrive in Amsterdam, northern Europe’s city of canals, in time for your 3:00 PM* check-in aboard the warmly lit AmaLucia, your elegant accommodations for a week of sailing along the Rhine. Unpack once for the week, freshen up in your comfortable stateroom, and make your way to a pre-dinner Welcome Reception where you will greet fellow travelers who have chosen to move through part of this Advent season on the Rhine.
This evening you will hear an introduction from special guests and the group of like-minded organizations who are graciously donning the role of hosts for this trip. Tomorrow we begin our journey inland from the river’s mouth on the North Sea to its origins in the frosted Swiss Alps.
*If your flight arrives in the morning, you are welcome to drop off your luggage at the ship and enjoy exploring Amsterdam while your stateroom is prepared for check-in.
Friday, December 10
Amsterdam | Utrecht
Begin the day with breakfast in our ship’s central restaurant, where you will become accustomed to delectable fare awaiting you morning, midday, and night. This morning offers you a leisurely, guided boat cruise through the heart of the Netherlands’ most charming canals. It’s back on board for lunch as our ship makes her way through tree-lined channels to the medieval city center of Utrecht, bustling with carolers and holiday preparations. Return to the ship for a sumptuous dinner and relaxed evening while our onboard poet shares some Advent verses.
Saturday, December 11
Düsseldorf | Cologne
Enjoy a relaxed winter morning and time with our special guest speakers while we sail from Utrecht to Düsseldorf. Following lunch on board, this afternoon presents you with a happy choice: Will you explore the streets of Düsseldorf, lively with the energy of her several uniquely themed Christmas markets? Or will you journey further to wander Cologne’s streets, and bask with cheeks aglow beneath the illuminated Cologne Cathedral?
In Düsseldorf, you may be drawn to the Engelchen Markt (Angel’s Market), twinkling with golden, angelic decor, or perhaps to the Handwerker Markt, replete with handmade goods. Choose to explore the city on a walking tour or on a relaxed bike tour.
Those who travel to Cologne via coach for the full afternoon will be introduced to one of the Rhine’s most darling markets, complete with a giant Christmas tree and live music, located right outside the city’s magnificent Gothic cathedral.
Sunday, December 12
Rüdesheim
Today on the way to Rüdesheim, our captain navigates a stretch of the Rhine River Gorge that has been marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its beauty and impressively adapted vineyards and dwellings which cling to the river’s steepest riverbanks. Venture on deck with a proper cup of something hot and keep your eyes wide open for castle sightings (you are bound to see one of the 30+!) along the stark winter shore. And we will gather for a time of worship on this third Sunday of Advent.
Our afternoon visit to Rüdesheim will offer the opportunity to experience the city by gondola, bicycle, or on foot through the city’s markets. Those who really want to stretch their legs may choose to hike through a local vineyard home to hallmark German Rheingau varietals, including the region’s famed mineral-forward Riesling. As you explore the cobbled city streets, look out for the life size nativity scene which has been the enduring centerpiece of Rudesheim’s Christmas Market of Nations. Perhaps fortify yourself with a warm mug of the city’s unique Rudesheimer Coffee, traditionally prepared with an oak-barrel-aged local brandy whose production methods date back to 1892.
Monday, December 13
Heidelberg
Early this morning, our ship left the port of Rüdesheim and charted the course to Heidelberg, hometown to the catechism that shaped the reformed Christian tradition in Germany and throughout the globe. This morning, gather to hear reflections from our special guest speakers.
Our afternoon presents several opportunities to explore the baroque Old Town, vibrant Christmas Market, and hilltop castle of Heidelberg. Or perhaps you will choose to explore the nearby medieval village of Speyer with her magnificent cathedral - the largest remaining Romanesque church in Europe and burial site for Germanic emperors for nearly 300 years.
Those looking to cover ground and stay active may choose between an optional guided hike of the Heidelberg Philosopher’s Path or a bicycle tour of the riverside town of Ladenburg.
Heidelberg
Tuesday, December 14
Strasbourg
Arrive in Strasbourg by morning, the glowing heart of France’s Alsace region. Learn about the city’s significant landmarks on a guided walking tour of the city, or take the cyclist’s view. Here you will enjoy one of Europe’s oldest and largest Christmas markets woven throughout the city’s masterful blend of Romanesque, gothic, and baroque architecture. In the afternoon, take a coach ride to the edge of the Black Forest mountain range to explore the charming town of Baden Baden, whose name derived from the German word for “bathing” fits its thermal spas and natural hot springs which were discovered by Roman settlers as early as the 3rd century. Fittingly, the city’s Christmas Market is located right outside of the Kurhaus, or “cure house”, a stunning neoclassical jewel that marks the city center.
It’s all aboard for another warming dinner on the AmaLucia as we set sail this evening for Breisach.
Wednesday, December 15
Breisach | Colmar
The brightly colored half-timbered houses that line the canals of Colmar are charming enough before the Christmas season begins. You will experience them in their full illuminated glory as you explore the festive markets of this fairy tale renaissance town and round out your Christmas gift selections. Or you may choose to embark on a guided tour through the wine country of Breisach, known for its volcanic-soil vineyards which are perfect for the cultivation of Spatburgunder (pinot noir), which you will have an opportunity to taste. It’s all board for lunch as we begin our last stretch of sailing towards Basel, Switzerland.
Relish dressing up for our final farewell dinner on board, where we will toast to our captain, crew, and fellow travelers that together have forged the Advent trip of a lifetime. Christmas is just ten days away!
