Arrive in Venice

Upon arrival in Venice (VCE), a private coach awaits to whisk you to your elegant lodgings at Hotel Villa Cipriani, a tranquil country residence within the walls of Asolo. Nestled in the verdant hills 50 miles away from the humming streets of Venice, Asolo has been named “The City of a Hundred Horizons,” endearing itself to artists, poets and travelers since the ancient Roman Empire. With Asolo’s city center mere steps from our hotel, you may choose to spend the afternoon exploring the city on your own or relaxing at the Villa before our day of touring tomorrow.

Friday, August 21

Asolo | Possagno

Following a charming breakfast at your hotel, rendezvous with our tour guide and drive to the first stop along our discovery of the foothills of the Dolomites: Villa Sandi. Begin your exploration of this Palladian architectural masterpiece by diving underground into the ancient barrel cellar. Perhaps an uncommon site for a modern art gallery, but it will surely be one to remember! We will conclude the tour by filling our glasses with some of the Villa’s finest Prosecco di Valdobbiadene and toasting to the trip ahead. Next up, a cooking class at Locanda Sandi restaurant awaits, where you will prepare traditional Italian cuisine with local late summer harvest under the direction of a professional chef. After exercising your culinary muscles, enjoy what you’ve prepared — augmented by the chef! — in the Locanda’s enclosed veranda bursting with greenery.

Following lunch, return to the hotel for a repose before traveling by coach to Possagno to become acquainted with the homeland and artistry of Antonia Canova, Italy’s foremost neoclassical sculptor. When Canova’s request to be buried in the Roman Pantheon was rejected, he seems to have channeled his disappointment well! Canova promptly drew up plans to build and finance the Tempio di Possagno, a Roman Catholic parish church where his remains lie, which you will pause to see on your way into the city.

Visit the gallery halls of Museum Gypsotheca Canova, filled with his signature forms etched in smooth marble, terra cotta sketches and plaster-cast models. Many guests experience these bright halls only in daylight, but our group will enjoy a private candlelit tour of the museum just after dusk. We’ll enjoy a delicious dinner as we wait for the natural light to fade from the museum, creating the perfect atmosphere to appreciate the intricacies of Canova’s work by lantern.

Dolomites Hiking

Make sure to enjoy a hiker’s breakfast this morning, for today we inch beyond the foothills and into the Dolomites themselves, passing through the iconic Giau Pass, known for its sweeping views and alpine beauty. Its hairpin turns are gratifying for the avid cyclist, while winter brings droves of adventurous paraskiers to the area. Prepare to immerse yourself in the raw beauty of the mountains. We’ll begin our trek to the famous 5 Torri (Five Towers) by meeting our local guide and making our way up Mount Averau via chairlift. This hike offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and historical remnants of World War I fortifications from Italian and Austro-Hungarian warfare. As you hike, you’ll be surrounded by dramatic cliffs, alpine meadows, and an everchanging landscape including views of Lastoi de Formin and Mount Nuvolau.

After the hike, we’ll enjoy a fortifying lunch at a local mountain restaurant, Rifugio Scoiattoli. Relax and refuel as you soak in the breathtaking views of the Dolomites around you.

Following lunch, we’ll continue our journey to Lagazuoi, one of the highest mountain peaks made accessible by cable car in the Dolomites. Enjoy more jaw-dropping scenery as we ascend to new heights on the cable car up to the top of Lagazuoi, where you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Dolomites. At the summit, you’ll have free time to explore, find the most stunning angle of the surrounding peaks, or simply relax in this alpine paradise. Don’t forget to snap some photos here. Make your way back down to the base of the peak, where we will return to Cortina for the evening.

Relax and enjoy the rest of the drive to Venice, where there will be plenty of time to explore the bustling streets and winding canals of the city of islands.
